It’s a peculiar paradox that when we live without boundaries, we become enslaved to our circumstances. But when we live within boundaries, we experience freedom fro them.
Providing time and space away from work, giving ourself permission to feel and express our emotions, disengaging from unhealthy friendships and relationships, withdrawing from uncomfortable situations. All various kinds of boundaries require one common trait- a choice. Our ability to make a choice is arguably the single most important factor in effectively navigating the various and often unexpected turns in life. It’s paradoxical, it’s difficult, and it’s often uncomfortable, but it’s the biggest step towards our individual emotional health.
Viktor Frankl (author of Man’s Search for Meaning) wrote “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”
